The old cold remedy is effective in relieving pain from sprains, but we must know how to apply. According to one study, apply ice on the ankle so it is more effective than intermittent cold to maintain for an extended period.
Although it is often used for cold soft tissue injuries (contusions, sprains, relaxation), there is no evidence to indicate what is the mode, duration and optimal frequency of application.
Patients during the 72 hours after applying ice sprained ankle in the intermittent mode (10 minutes cold, 10 "rest" and ice every 10 hours, at least) experience less pain that conventional treatment ( apply ice for 20 minutes followed, with minimum intervals of two hours).
"The intermittent application of cryotherapy in a mild ankle sprain or moderate significantly reduces the level of pain during motion one week after the injury," summarizes the authors.
By contrast, the work has not seen the ice at more advantageous for long-term effects of the injury.
