The Franciscan Dolphin

The Franciscan
They are eighteen the species of dolphins (odontocetos) already registered in the Uruguay inside whose group small dolphins and porpoises coexist; but also the orca and the sperm whale with their eighteen meters long; those common ones of seeing, and those that have been seen very few times. Although little it is given to know, one of the small species of dolphins that inhabits the waters
of the River of the Silver he/she is the Franciscan (Pontoporia Blainvillei). it is difficult to sight, since it possesses a small size and it is of color brown ocher, what camouflages it perfectly. This attribute, that is to say, its color, bears to the determination of its name, since it is similar to that of the gear of the Franciscan monks.
Contrary to the tonina (the one that inhabits many seas and oceans of the world), the Franciscan has a distribution restricted the Atlantic Sudoccidental. Morfológicamente, presents characteristic similar to the species of river dolphins that exist: they have long muzzles, small eyes and their size oscillates among the meter and half, and the three meters of longitude. The females don't measure more than a meter sixty and
they have a breeding every two years, reaching the sexual maturity among the two three years; and being their average of fifteen year-old life. Their favorite food is the young fish of bottom (whiting, corvine, squids, among other).
Extinction danger
Beyond the little certain number of this species and their drop reproduction rate, one of the bigger problems that help to that this diminishes is that many copies, they are caught accidentally in the nets of handmade fishing, because they cannot detect the presence of them, getting entangled without being able to breathe. For this cause, the Franciscan has legal protection in the three countries where she inhabits: Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina.
In spite of the investigations and expensive tests that have been worked to contribute to the survival of the Franciscan, one of the most important aspects to contribute with it is it the diffusion of the presence of the same one in the region. It would be elementary to integrate it to the fauna of it spoils it and to consider it as an important element of their cultural identity.
