Alcoholism and depression


A group of scientists says it found a gene linked to both alcoholism and depression, could improve the detection of people at risk or designing new treatments.

A psychiatrist and geneticist from the Institute of Psychiatry, University of King's College London, explained that if genetic discoveries are confirmed case a new route for the development of drugs used to treat depression and alcoholism. Previous studies conducted with twins and adopted siblings revealed the possibility of common genes among people with depression or abuse alcohol.

These disorders appear to be hereditary. According to the psychiatrist, is the first time is a specific gene (CHRM2) increases the risk of contracting these diseases.
