Risk of depression

To investigate whether depressive symptoms are associated with risky sexual behaviors, a U.S. team conducted a large study that included questions to 4152 boys and girls who had been interviewed in 1995 on the matter and also a year later. The level of depression of the participants was evaluated through a questionnaire of 19 questions.

The guys that scored the first interview are those who recognized a year after failing to use protection or birth control methods in their last sexual encounter. Also showed a greater tendency to consume drugs or alcohol before their last intercourse. The girls had a higher score less used condoms and other methods to prevent an unwanted pregnancy and those that were had three or more sexual partners in the past year.

Other studies have suggested a link between depression and sexual risk, but this analysis is unique because the sample is large, representative and has been observed for a year. "Young people are more anxious and isolated tendency to yield to the time of sexual intimacy to share," the report said. They can also use sex to cope with their symptoms of depression.
