According to a study in dermatology, loss of elasticity and density of the dermis is one of the effects produced by chronic sun exposure. Topical application of vitamin C stimulates dermal collagen synthesis improving photodamaged skin.
The specialist conducted an investigation with 10 women aged 50 to 60 years, treated daily for six months with cream of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) 5%, which were compared to an equal number of volunteers, under the same conditions, using the cream without the vitamin.
Skin biopsies taken at end of treatment were studied by light and electron microscopy. Although they all could see the damage from sun exposure, skin treated with vitamin C had a greater number of elastic fibers and fibroblasts metabolically structured assets, compared with skin treated with placebo alone.
